Château Tertre de la Mouleyre 2015 – The quiet greatness of Saint-Émilion
A Saint-Émilion Grand Cru that doesn't need to be loud to make an impression.
Château Tertre de la Mouleyre 2015 is a wine for connoisseurs – rare, handcrafted and with an elegance that is otherwise only found in the great legends.
The vines of this small winery, which has been completely organic since 1995, are around 50 years old. 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc.
🍷 The Philosophy – When Wine Becomes Art
There are wines that are produced.
And there are wines that are accompanied by food.
On a tiny hill in Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse , one of the five sister villages of Saint-Émilion, Éric Jeanneteau cultivates one of the smallest vineyards in the appellation. Just 1.5 to 1.7 hectares of vines – barely more than a large garden.
Here, the hand reigns supreme, not the machine. Each vine receives individual attention, every decision made with care. The yield is radically reduced throughout the year: a maximum of eight small bunches of grapes per vine , often well under a kilogram in total. Economically almost inexplicable – but uncompromising in terms of quality.
Organic farming has been practiced here since the 1990s, and certified since 2001 , long before organic became a trend. Not for marketing reasons, but out of conviction.
🌱 Terroir – Limestone as a foundation
The vines grow on a layer of clay over solid limestone – one of the most sought-after terroirs of Saint-Émilion. This soil gives the wine its characteristic freshness, precision, and longevity.
The location is remarkable:
A stone's throw from Château Valandraud , and on the other side Péby Faugères , including Castillon's superstar Clos Louie . And yet Tertre de la Mouleyre deliberately remains out of the limelight.
☀️ The 2015 vintage – A gift from the sun
2015 is considered an exceptional year in Saint-Émilion: maturity, concentration and depth.
But while many wines of this warm year slip into opulence and heaviness, the Tertre de la Mouleyre 2015 maintains an almost aristocratic balance.
The Merlot brings juicy dark fruit – cherries, wild berries – while the Cabernet Franc provides freshness, structure, and a subtle spiciness. The limestone holds everything together and gives the wine its cool, elegant character.
In style, it is more reminiscent of the finesse of great Burgundies than the power of classic Bordeaux.
🍇 Character & Style
In the glass, the wine appears dense, but never heavy.
The tannins are silky, perfectly integrated, the finish is long, calm and precise.
Aromatics:
Dark cherries, wild berries, fine earthiness, chalky minerality, a hint of violets and subtle wood.
🍷 Vinification & Aging
In the basement, Éric Jeanneteau works like a conductor:
- Spontaneous fermentation (100%)
- Vinification of individual plots in small stainless steel fermentation tanks (max. 25 hl)
- Malo in barrique
- Aging in equal parts in new, one-year-old, and two-year-old barriques
- Multiple bâtonnage processes until bottling
The cellar is simple – but a true conductor works within its walls.
Each year's edition is reinterpreted, like the same symphony under a different conductor.
👨🌾 The winemaker – Éric Jeanneteau
Éric Jeanneteau is the third generation to run Château Tertre de la Mouleyre.
He literally lives off these few hectares – and you can taste that in the wine.
A quiet perfectionist, uncompromising in detail, far removed from the mainstream.
